Human rights situation in the OT – Letter from Syria

QUESTION OF THE VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE OCCUPIED ARAB

TERRITORIES, INCLUDING PALESTINE

Letter dated 31 August 1998 from the Permanent Representative a.i.

of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations Office at

Geneva addressed to the High Commissioner for Human Rights

and to the Chairman of the Commission on Human Rights

In accordance with instructions received from my Government, I wish to draw your attention to the fact that the Israeli occupation authorities are continuing their various aggressive and inhuman practices on Syrian territory.  On 26 August 1998, they fired flares at Ain Tineh near the village of Majdal Shams in the occupied Syrian Golan, causing the outbreak of a fire on unirrigated stony land near the border strip which was extinguished by the competent Syrian authorities.

I would be grateful if you would kindly have this letter circulated as an official document of the fiftyfifth session of the Commission on Human Rights under agenda item 8 of the provisional agenda entitled Question of the Violation of human rights in the occupied Arab territories, including Palestine.

(Signed)  Taher alHussami

Permanent Representative a.i.
