Report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (for the period from 21 January to 21 July 2004)
Addendum
Since the submission for issuance of the current report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (for the period from 21 January to 21 July 2004) (S/2004/572), the following events have occurred. On 20 July 2004, a grave breach of the ceasefire took place when sniper fire from Lebanese territory, allegedly produced by Hezbollah sharpshooters, killed two Israeli soldiers in an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) outpost near Shetula. IDF retaliated with tank fire directed at a Hezbollah position close to Ayta ash Shab, killing a Hezbollah fighter manning the post, and launched missiles at another Hezbollah position in the same vicinity. That night, there were multiple Israeli flights over Lebanon, two of which generated powerful sonic booms over Beirut. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon and my senior representatives in the region undertook immediate efforts with both sides to contain the incidents, calling for calm and restraint.
