In December 2019, the UN General Assembly designed 29 September as International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. The designation is intended to raise awareness of efforts to meet a key indicator UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12, which aims to promote responsible consumption and production. The target is to “halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses.” The day’s events will be led jointly by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
