Partnering for Action: Implementation of the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions in the Complex Setting of Overlapping Crises

23 September from 11:15 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. EDT

In a follow-up to the High-Level Event on Jobs and Social Protection held on 28 September 2021, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will convene a Meeting of Heads of State and Government to discuss progress and next steps for the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions launched at the High-Level Event last year.

Today, the world faces challenges of unprecedented scale. In addition to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has disrupted life and caused an enormous loss of jobs and livelihoods, the escalating climate emergency and impacts of the war in Ukraine are putting negative pressure on food, energy and finance, adding to immediate and long-term risks to our prosperity. Billions of people are facing the greatest cost of living crisis in a generation, compounded by an uneven and stalled labour market recovery.

Looking ahead, anticipated structural economic transformations brought about by rapid technological and demographic changes are further compounding labour market risks. Constrained by higher debt burdens and shrinking fiscal space, countries face a difficult scenario that demand increasing much-needed public investments to overcome these multiple crises, achieve a human-centred sustainable recovery and facilitate the structural transformations and just transitions necessary to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and, on the other hand, contain debt vulnerabilities.

Ahead of the Annual Meetings of the IMF and World Bank, the G20 and G7 Summits, COP27, and following key High-Level Events including the Transforming Education Summit (TES), this event will convene Member States and stakeholders that have signaled commitments to operationalize the Global Accelerator, share plans, discuss opportunities for engagement, and express commitments of support. It will be webcast on UN WebTV.
