Ahfad University for Women conducts local and regional activities to promote gender equality and empower women and girls

In 2018, Ahfad University for Women's (AUW) Gender and Reproductive Health and Rights Resource and Advocacy Center (GRACe) conducted activities to promote Sustainable Development Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

Throughout the year, training programmes were organized to prepare women and girls for leadership roles in the workplace. For example, AUW's Student Union and GRACe celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child through their With Her: A Skilled Girl Force initiative that provided girls with the skills and training needed for joining the workforce. The programme also fostered collaboration and investments among stakeholders to increase employment opportunities for women and girls.

Kristu Jayanti College promotes No-Poverty programmes in Indian villages

6 February 2019 - Kristu Jayanti College (India), a member institution of the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) that has been chosen as the SDG Hub for Sustainable Development Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere, launched action-oriented programmes on campus and in neighboring villages, focusing on the theme Samruddha Vishwa (No Poverty).

Activities were carried out during the Kristu Jayanti College National Social Service Annual Special Camp at Doddamaralavadi village from 16 to 22 November 2018 with the intention of ending poverty, including:

'Addiction is a disease, not a choice', UNODC event highlights role of education in fighting stigma around drug use

30 January 2019 – A special event was hosted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) last Thursday, 24 January to spotlight the negative impact of stigma that surrounds drug addiction and the importance of education in the prevention of this growing problem.

The panel discussion Leaving No One Behind: the Drug Epidemic as a Global Health Challenge featured Mr. David Sheff, best-selling author of Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction; Ms. Vicky Cornell, co-founder of the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation; Dr. Nora D. Volkow, Director of the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse; and Dr. Gilberto Gerra, Chief of the UNODC Drug Prevention and Health Branch.

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University holds Model UN roundtable discussion at Mission of Kazakhstan

17 January 2019 – Al-Farabi Kazakh National University held a Model UN-New Silk Way roundtable discussion at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the United Nations in New York.  

The Model UN-New Silk Way Initiative provides master degree students from Al-Farabi Kazakh University with a 10-day academic exchange programme to enhance their understanding of peacebuilding, diplomacy and grow their awareness of the Security Council's role in the United Nations. The roundtable discussion offered students the opportunity to present their viewpoints to Ambassador Kairat Umarov, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the United Nations.

'Education transforms lives' says UN chief on first-ever International Day of Education

24 January 2019 - Education transforms lives, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterressaid, recounting his personal story of teaching in the slums of Lisbon where he saw first-hand that education is an engine for poverty eradication and a force for peace.

At the heart of the SDGs today, education serves as a basis for achieving the other goals, including reducing inequalities; improving health; achieving gender equality; fighting hate speech, xenophobia and intolerance; protecting the planet's resources and nurturing global citizenship.

Yet, the UN chief flagged, at least 262 million children, adolescents and youth are out of school, most of them girls.  Millions more who attend school are not mastering the basics.

Call for Submissions: Good Practices, Success Stories and Lessons Learned in SDG Implementation

23 January 2019 - The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) is launching a call for submissions of good practices, success stories and lessons learned in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.

Governments, UN entities, international and regional organizations, Major Groups and other Stakeholders are invited to submit contributions from 1 November 2018 to 28 February 2019, using a dedicated web-based portal.

Signs suggest global economic growth spurt has peaked but will remain steady at 3 percent in 2019–2020

21 January 2019 – The global economy will continue to grow at a steady pace of around 3 percent in 2019 and 2020 amid signs that global growth has peaked. However, a worrisome combination of development challenges could further undermine growth, according to the United Nations World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) 2019, which was launched today.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres cautioned While global economic indicators remain largely favourable, they do not tell the whole story. He said the World Economic Situation and Prospects 2019 raises concerns over the sustainability of global economic growth in the face of rising financial, social and environmental challenges.

UN hosts seminar on the new geopolitics of artificial intelligence

3 December 2018 – The Policy and Mediation Division of the Department of Political Affairs at the United Nations hosted a seminar on the New Geopolitics of Artificial Intelligence presented by Eleonore Pauwels. Ms. Pauwels specializes in artificial intelligence (AI) research at the United Nations University's Centre for Policy Research and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. The discussion focused on the need for prudent global governance of artificial intelligence.

Ms. Pauwels emphasized the current trust-deficit disorder the international community feels toward artificial intelligence, mainly due to its potential risks. This deficit could widen if innovations in AI are not matched with international and national governance.
