SECRETARY-GENERAL MEETS WITH MINISTER IN PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY
ON SITUATION IN GAZA, WEST BANK, EAST JERUSALEM
The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:
The Secretary-General met on Tuesday, 16 April, with Faisal Husseini, Minister in the Palestinian Authority. Mr. Husseini described the serious situation prevailing in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem as a result of the Israeli closure of these areas. Mr. Husseini emphasized the effects of the closure on East Jerusalem, to which Palestinian residents of the West Bank and Gaza were denied access, even on humanitarian grounds.
The Secretary-General expressed deep concern, noting that United Nations programmes and agencies have been prevented from travelling to work as a result of the closure.
