GIORGIO GIACOMELLI, SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR
ON THE OCCUPIED PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES,
TO VISIT FROM TERRITORIES 11 TO 15 OCTOBER 2000
Giorgio Giacomelli, Special Rapporteur of the Commission on Human Rights to investigate Israel's violations of international law and international humanitarian law in the Palestinian territories occupied by Israel since 1967
Under resolution 1993/2 A of 19 February 1993, will carry out a brief visit to the occupied Palestinian territories from 11 to 15 October 2000.
The visit is taking place in the context of the recent violence in the occupied Palestinian territories which has resulted in considerable loss of life. The Special Rapporteur wishes to gain first-hand insight into the present human rights situation.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, today welcomed the visit and indicated her hope that all relevant human rights mechanisms will remain fully focused on the present situation, which continues to be of great concern.
Mr. Giacomelli intends to visit the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip.
