SECRETARY-GENERAL DEPLORES RECENT VIOLENT INCIDENTS IN OCCUPIED TERRITORIES;
APPEALS FOR RESTRAINT AND MORE INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC ASSISTANCE
The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:
The Secretary-General is deeply concerned at the substantial increase in violent incidents during recent weeks in which a number of Palestinians and Israelis were killed and wounded in the occupied territories. He deplores these acts of violence and appeals to all sides for restraint and to avoid steps which will aggravate the situation.
At the same time, the Secretary-General is concerned at the sharp deterioration of the economic situation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, resulting from Israel's decision at the end of March to close off the territories.
The Secretary-General appeals to the international community for greater economic assistance to the occupied territories. In this connection, he reminds the major donors of the critical financial situation of the United Nations Relief and works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
