Atfaluna Furniture Exhibition Opens in Gaza City
Gaza, Palestine, February, 2013 — As parts of its continuous development initiatives, Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children (ASDC) inaugurated a furniture Exhibition in Gaza City within the project entitled: “Improving the Socio-Economic Status of People with Disabilities in the Gaza Strip within an Inclusive Development Approach”, a three-year project co-funded by the European Union and (CBM) – Germany.
The first period of the project was based on vocational training courses for 30 deaf and hard of hearing men conducted at the carpentry, upholstery, and wood painting sections of ASDC Crafts Production Unit. The training aimed at improving the knowledge and skills of deaf youth in the production of high quality finished furniture and increasing their employability potential in the community.
Atfaluna Furniture Exhibition is located in a close range of ASDC’s main building in Gaza city. The exhibition has a range of high quality furniture pieces with a touch of Palestinian traditional spirit including dining tables and chairs, bedroom furniture, bookshelves and sofas, and office furniture, all made by deaf people. The exhibition aims at promoting the abilities and talents of deaf people, improving their social and economic conditions, and giving them the opportunity to meet their own needs within an inclusive society.
Mr. Hashem Ghazal, deaf trainer and responsible of the furniture production at ASDC, expressed how proud he feels with the opening of “Atfaluna Furniture”. Mr. Ghazal stated that the exhibition will praise the deaf persons for their efficiency in the field of the furniture production and will demonstrate their willingness and determination.
Worth noting that the income of the exhibition will be used to support the sustainability of the program and improve the quality of life of deaf and hard of hearing people in the Gaza Strip.
