Attacks on Lebanon – OIC SecGen statement – Press release

OIC/A-003/96

NY, 15 April 1996

Press statement by His Excellency Dr. Hamid Algabid,

Secretary-General of the OIC on the latest Israeli attacks on Lebanon

Dr. Hamid Algabid, OIC Secretary-General, is following with grave concern the continuing Israeli attacks on Lebanese towns and villages including the suburbs of the Lebanese capital, Beirut.  These attacks have taken a toll of tens of dead and wounded among Lebanese civilians and led to the displacement of tens of thousand Lebanese citizens.

The OIC Secretary-General strongly condemns the Israeli attacks and reaffirms the solidarity of the Islamic Ummah with the Lebanese people in their struggle to regain their rights and liberate their occupied territory.  He appeals to the international community to seek an immediate cessation of the attacks and take the necessary steps to ensure full implementation of Resolution 425 of the Security Council which guarantees Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Lebanese territories, which alone is likely to end the continuing vicious circle of violence.

The Secretary-General believes that the Israeli attacks on the Lebanese people and Israel's continuing closure and siege of Palestinian territories as well as its decision to freeze the peace negotiations, threaten the peace process and undermine stability in the region.
