Federal Foreign Office responds to announcement of new Israeli settlements in the West Bank

date of issue

31.01.2015

A Federal Foreign Office spokesperson issued the following statement in Berlin on 31 January on the announcement of new Israeli settlements in the West Bank:

The Federal Government is very concerned about the recent calls for tenders to build 450 housing units in several locations in the West Bank as well as the publication of plans for a further 93 units in East Jerusalem. These steps place further obstacles in the way of a two-state solution and send the wrong political signal against the backdrop of the stalled negotiation process. We have repeatedly appealed to the parties to refrain from taking unilateral steps which could lead to an escalation of the already tense situation in the region, particularly in Jerusalem and Gaza.

Background information:

On 30 January 2015 the Israeli Government published calls for tenders to build a total of 450 housing units in several locations in the West Bank as well as plans for a further 93 units in East Jerusalem.
