PRESS RELEASE

Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov Speaks to Israeli First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni by Telephone

825-29-05-2007

On May 28, a telephone conversation between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov and First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel Tzipi Livni took place at the Israeli side's initiative.

During the conversation, the sides discussed the situation in the Middle East in the light of the military escalation around and in the Palestinian territories. In this context certain matters were touched upon relating to an upcoming ministerial meeting of the Middle East Quartet of international mediators in Berlin on May 30.

Sergey Lavrov stressed that any further growth of tension did not correspond to the real interests of either the Israelis or the Palestinians and would put regional security and stability in jeopardy. Priority attention should be paid to a resumption of negotiation contacts in the interest of normalizing Palestinian-Israeli relations, he said.
