Middle East situation/attack – Statement by the UN Special Co-ordinator

Statement by the UN Special Co-ordinator

Gaza, 4 August 2002 – The following is a statement made today by the United Nations Special Co-ordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Mr. Terje Roed-Larsen:

UN Special Co-ordinator Terje Roed-Larsen strongly condemns the Palestinian violence today that left at least 12 people dead.  This includes a civilian bus bombing in northern Israel claiming by Hamas that killed nine and wounded dozens, and a shooting in East Jerusalem that left three dead.  Mr. Roed-Larsen said these despicable acts of murder against civilians are both morally repugnant and a direct violation of international laws.  He said that this alarming escalation of violence must be met with intensified international efforts to end the bloodshed.  He re-iterated the UN Secretary-General’s long-standing position that the enemies of peace should not be allowed to derail efforts to reach an enduring political solution.
