Japan provides assistive devices to people with disabilities in Palestine – Japan MoFA press release/Non-UN document

Celebrating the Handover for the Provision of Assisting Devices
for the People with Disabilities

On Thursday November 20, 2014, in Bayt Al-Ajdad Elderly Home in Jericho, Mr. Junya Matsuura, Japan's Ambassador for Palestinian Affairs and Representative of Japan to the PA, and H.E. Mr. Shawqi Issa, Minister of Social Affairs, with the attendance of H.E. Mr. Majed Fityani, Governor of Jericho and H.E. Dr. Sa'eb Erekat, the Chief Negotiator participated in the handover ceremony for the provision of assisting devices for the people with disabilities which comes under a non-project grant aid for the provision of industrial products that was extended two years ago in Dec 2012 with 200 million Yen (about US$ 1.72 million).

Out of this contribution of US$ 1.72 million funded by the Government of Japan, around US$ 0 8 million was utilized for the purchase of 430 wheelchairs and 150 walking support wheels for the Ministry of Social Affairs institutions. Those assistive devices that were handed today were manufactured by Japanese companies which suffered from the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred in 2011.

Mr. Matsuura in his speech emphasized Japan's firm commitment of supporting Palestinian people from human security perspective as well as the importance of implementing social and economic development projects needed for Palestinian communities.

Since 1993 the Government of Japan has extended its official development assistance approximately $1.50 billion, to the Palestinians.
