Comments by
Javier SOLANA,
EU High Representative for the CFSP,
following the killing of Abdel-Aziz al-Rantissi
Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), made the following comments after today's action by Israeli forces in Gaza:
"The European Union has consistently condemned extra-judicial killings. Israel has a right to protect its citizens from terrorist attacks, but actions of this type are not only unlawful, they are not conducive to lowering tension. This is particularly the case in a moment when the international community – as it will at the upcoming Quartet meeting – is examining ways to support Prime Minister Sharon's Gaza disengagement plan provided certain conditions are met.
Discussing the disengagement proposals at the meeting of European ministers today in Ireland, we urged an end to violence and terrorism as well as the resumption of a cease-fire embracing all parties and groups. Today's action will not facilitate a positive outcome of this process."
