EU urged to act on human rights abuses in relations with Israel and Palestine
The EU has not used all the means it has to promote human rights in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, said MEPs and experts during a discussion on human rights and international humanitarian law in EU relations with Israel and Palestine in the human rights subcommittee on Thursday morning.
The chair of the delegation for relations with the Palestinian Legislative Council, Emer Costello (S&D, IR), and other MEPs urged the Commission and the EU External Action Service to take action to ban settlement products. "When will the Commission face the fact that illegal production causes illegal products?" asked Margete Auken (Greens/EFA, DA).
MEPs and experts also raised issues including freedom of speech, access to water and illegal or controversial detentions. The plight of refugees, in particular, was discussed with Mark Brailsford, UNRWA Senior Protection Coordinator and the delegation of Palestinian refugees.
