Situation of the Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike in Israel 

We’re extremely concerned about the rapidly deteriorating health of several of the Palestinian prisoners who have gone on hunger strike in Israel.

For humanitarian reasons, we urge the Israeli authorities to be sensitive to the risk of a tragic outcome and to take appropriate action as a matter of urgency.

Let me remind you that, on several occasions, we’ve expressed – in a national capacity and with our European partners – our concerns to the Israeli authorities. We also emphasized that administrative detention should remain an exception, be of limited duration and be used in compliance with fundamental guarantees, notably the rights of defence of the detainee and the right to a fair trial within a reasonable period of time.

We are continuing to closely monitor developments in the situation.
