EU supports Gaza tennis championship for people with disabilities – EU press release/Non-UN document


A Tennis Championship for People with Disability in the Gaza Strip

July 2012, Gaza, Palestine — In a very friendly competitive atmosphere, the advocacy committee for the rights and needs of people with disability in the Gaza Strip has implemented a tennis championship within the activities of the project entitled: “Improving the Socio-Economic Status of People with Disabilities in the Gaza Strip within an Inclusive Development Approach”, A project co-funded by the European Union and CBM, Germany.

The Championship was held in the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, Khanyoness, in corporation with a number of a disabled sport clubs and the main rehabilitation associations in the Gaza Strip: Jabaliha Rehabilitation Society, National Rehabilitation Society, Al Amal Rehabilitation Society, Deir Al Balah Society for Rehabilitation, and Nusseirat Rehabilitation Society, in addition to Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children.

The participants were people with disability; deaf and physically disabled from all parts of the Gaza Strip. This event was created to encourage and focus their talents on productive activities like team oriented sports which ultimately build a solid foundation for life skills and encourages many qualities like team work, cooperation, initiative and most importantly how to live a healthy and productive life style and integrate them into their social surroundings.

From his part, Naim Kabaja, ASDC Director, stated that this initiative comes as a greater support to encourage people with a disability to take on roles across the whole of the sport activities, in a bid to help them strengthen their self-esteem and their abilities to overcome the negative perceptions of people with disabilities in the society.

At the end of the event, several awards were distributed to the winners by Mr.Kabaka and Mr. Jehad Abu Hatab, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society Director. Worth mentioning that, Mr.Kabaja offered a shield of thanks and appreciation to all the event organizers.
