PRRO 10387.1 – Protracted Relief Operation for Non-Refugee Palestinians
01 September 2007 – 31 August 2009
Under the PRRO, WFP supports over 650,000 of the most vulnerable and food-insecure nonrefugee population in the West Bank and Gaza who have been affected by a steady decline of living standards.
• Commodity pipelines in some activities will face shortfalls starting in June 2008 for oil, pulses and other commodities. A major cereal shortfall will begin in July. Urgent contributions are needed now to avoid these pipeline breaks. Donors are urged to continue their support of this critical operation as the level of forecasted contributions is very low.
• WFP urges donors to provide funding so it can continue giving food assistance to the growing number of Palestinians impoverished by a nearly eigth-month economic blockade imposed on Gaza. Should no contributions be received to cover this gap, WFP will have to consider a drastic reduction in beneficiaries and programmes during the second year of the PRRO.
• The average cost of basic food items (wheat flour, rice, pulses, vegetable oil, olive oil, sugar and milk powder) is approximately 31 percent higher compared to June 2007.
• Fuel shortages are affecting all services provided by Gaza’s power plant, water networks, sewage treatment, transport systems (including collecting solid waste) and health/education service providers.
