WFP Welcomes Generous Donation From The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Campaign
Rome, 8 January 2009 – WFP today welcomed a US$4 million donation from “The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Campaign for the Relief of the Palestinian People in Gaza.”
The donation will be used immediately to provide urgently needed food assistance to more than 265,000 civilians in the Gaza Strip.
“This is a timely and extremely welcome donation that will help the people of Gaza in their hour of need,” said Christine van Nieuwenhuyse, WFP Representative in the occupied Palestinian territory, adding that the money would be used to purchase wheat flour, vegetable oil, sugar and salt.
The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Campaign for the Relief of the Palestinian People in Gaza has been collecting money from people living in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, who wish to support humanitarian work in the occupied Palestinian territory.
WFP is providing food assistance to more than 265,000 people in Gaza in 2009, and the cost of the humanitarian operation is expected to rise due to additional needs caused by the latest upsurge in conflict.
People in Gaza are facing growing difficulties locating the food they need to feed their families, as few commodities are available on local markets, and humanitarian organisations are struggling to operate under the current insecure conditions.
