STATEMENT BY HANS-GERT POETTERING ON MEETING WITH THE ARAB AMBASSADORS IN BRUSSELS

The President of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Poettering today met with the Arab Ambassadors in Brussels, including 21 Representatives to the EU from the Arab and Muslim world. The meeting dealt with a wide range of political matters of common interest, including the Middle East Peace Process and the Dialogue between Cultures.

After the meeting, President Poettering stated:

"On the Middle East, the Mecca agreement to form a unity government of Fatah and Hamas in Palestine has created a new opportunity to create stability in the region. In particular, the new Palestinian Government must reject every form of violence and must recognise and implement international agreements. It is only on this basis that progress can be made.

I hope that the Middle East Quartet meeting tomorrow in Berlin, taking account of the proposals in the Arab Peace Initiative, will reactivate the Peace Process in the Middle East.

As President of the European Parliament, I will continue to lend my full support to Intercultural Dialogue. This is an important basis for improving and intensifying mutual understanding and cooperation. That is why, on my proposal, it will be the main point on the agenda of the next Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly in Tunis in March."
