Sweden Increases its 2008 General Fund Contribution
March 3, 2008
Today Sweden announced its 2008 contribution to UNRWA’s General Fund of SEK 252 million (approximately US$ 40 million). This represents an increase of SEK 10 million (US$ 1.5 million) from last year.
Sweden is the Agency’s third largest donor. In 2007, it contributed SEK 242 million (US$ 34.3 million) to the General Fund (UNRWA’s regular budget) in addition to SEK 70 million (US$ 10.3 million) for the Agency’s Emergency Appeals.
"With this generous contribution", UNRWA’s Commissioner-General, Karen AbuZayd, noted, "Sweden once again demonstrates its steadfast support for UNRWA and Palestine refugees." She added that "Sweden is an important partner of UNRWA – a strong supporter in terms of financial assistance as well as engagement. Sweden sets a high standard of good donorship and its active support underscores its firm commitment to Palestine refugees."
Sweden also supports the Agency’s Organizational Development process and part of its General Fund contribution will be allocated to pursue this comprehensive reform initiative.
