PRESS RELEASE

Emergency Islamic conference of foreign ministers

to examine the serious developments in the Palestinian territories

The Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers (ICFM) of the Member States of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) will be convening an Emergency Session next Saturday 18 November 2006 to examine the repercussions of the serious escalation provoked by the aggressions committed in the Palestinian territories, particularly in the aftermath of the horrific massacre recently perpetrated by the Israeli occupation forces in Beit Hanoun.

The decision to convene this Conference had been agreed during a telephone conversation held between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and OIC Secretary-General Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, in which they discussed the deteriorating conditions in the Palestinian territories in the light of the persistent Israeli attacks on the Palestinian people.

This Emergency Session of the Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers (ICFM) is also expected to consider ways and means to extend the necessary support to the Palestinian people in facing the Israeli assaults as well as the coordination of the Islamic position on the international scene with a view to bringing pressure to bear on Israel so as to compel it to put an end to its repeated aggressions and abide by the resolutions of international legitimacy.
