Statement by Federal Minister Steinmeier on the Mecca inter-Palestinian agreement
Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement today (9 February) on the agreement reached by the Palestinians yesterday in Mecca:
"I welcome the fact that the parties in Mecca yesterday succeeded in agreeing to form a government of national unity. I hope that this agreement will bring inter-Palestinian violence to a halt.
I would like to thank the Saudi Arabian Government, and in particular King Abdullah for his valuable efforts.
Together with our partners, we will in the next few days carefully examine the Mecca agreement and the arrangements announced there by the two sides.
What we expect of the Palestinians is clear: The violence against Israel must end. The dialogue with the Israeli Government commenced by President Abbas must be continued. All previous agreements and accords between Israel and the PLO, as well as the road map, remain the basis of this dialogue.
We expect all parties, in mutual recognition of each other, to remain committed to the goal of a two?state solution – of two states, Israel and Palestine, existing together in peace and security."
