EUHR Solana expresses concern at today’s attacks in Gaza
Summary |
June 10, 2003: Javier Solana, EU High Representative for CFSP, expresses concern at today’s attacks in Gaza (Brussels) |
Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, condemned today the killing of innocent civilians in Gaza in the course of military action against Hamas leader Rantissi and other Palestinian militants.
“I wish to express my deep preoccupation at the latest violent events in Gaza, in which several innocent civilians have been killed and others injured.
Such extreme military actions can only contribute to increasing tensions on the ground, at a time when all parties' efforts should instead be focussed on the implementation of the “Road Map” for peace."
Javier Solana spoke later in the evening with the Palestinian Prime Minister, Mr. Mahmud Abbas, to exchange views on the situation following the latest turn of events. He reassured the PM of the EU's support, and encouraged him to pursue his efforts to implement the Road Map, which should be accepted by all Palestinians.
