The European Union has been urged to do more to alleviate the crisis in the Palestinian territories caused by international sanctions and a devastated economy.
The call comes from the head of the UN agency assisting Palestinian refugees – UNRWA – Karen AbuZayd. Speaking in Brussels Thursday, Ms. AbuZayd said UNRWA urgently needs nearly $20 million in emergency funding to continue providing education, health care, social services and aid to more than four million Palestinian refugees living in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. She said the Palestinian “economy is almost completely devastated,” noting that “all the businesses are gone.”
