President Abbas raises Palestinian flag at UN body

Palestinian flag is raised at UNESCO ceremony

The President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, on Tuesday raised the Palestinian flag at the headquarters of the UN cultural agency, UNESCO.

This is the first time its flag has been raised over a UN body.

Palestine was admitted into UNESCO as a full member in October this year. This despite protests from certain states, including Israel and the US.

The US consequently withdrew substantial funding to the agency.

Mr. Abbas along UNESCO’s Director-General Irina Bokova attended the ceremony in Paris.

Susan Williams, UNESCO’s Media Chief was there. She spoke to Maha Fayek about what this means for the Palestinians and the Organization.
