American Friends of UNRWA Launches Adopt a School in Gaza MultiMedia Campaign
1 March 2011
American Friends of UNRWA (AFU) is drawing attention to the need for increased support of quality education in Gaza by a launching a new multimedia website in support of UNRWA’s Adopt a School Programme in Gaza at www.afu-adoptaschool.org.
Adopt a School Website
Adopt a School is an ongoing campaign aimed at curbing the negative effects on children of prolonged conflict and poverty, and increasing the quality of education at UNRWA schools in Gaza. The programme will provide critically needed maintenance work to damaged or run-down schools, administer psychological and remedial support for students in need, cover the cost of school supplies Gazan families would otherwise be unable to afford, equip schools with sports equipment and recreational items to engage children in fun and educational activities, and provide programmes for all students including those with learning and physical disabilities.
AFU’s new website emphasises the importance of education for children in Gaza, while showcasing personal stories of Gazan students making an impact. The website also gives donors the opportunity to make their own impact, highlighting how their donations can make a big difference in the life of a child. The first school to be adopted and featured on the website is Beach Elementary Co-ed School, near Gaza City, which serves 1,262 students in extremely difficult conditions.
AFU recently gave a US$ 25,000 donation to UNRWA in support of the Adopt a School Programme, and through the website, AFU aims to raise a total of US$ 1.2 million for Beach School.
