American food aid to Palestinian people expands
Ramallah, West Bank – Palestinian communities throughout the West Bank and Gaza will receive food commodities through a new grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). With this $24.6 million grant, the US government has now funded 35 percent of the World Food Program's (WFP) two-year appeal for the Palestinian people.
WFP is putting $9 million into the local economy through the procurement of 20,000 metric tons of wheat flour and 1,000 metric tons of vegetable oil. Food baskets will be distributed to an estimated 30,000 non-refugee beneficiaries. Thousands of Palestinians will continue to receive support through Food for Work and Food for Training programs.
On April 7, US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice announced a continuation of American assistance to the Palestinian people in partnership with WFP. With this new support, WFP will expand its coverage to 25 percent more villages in Gaza.
