EU Presidency statement on the recent developments in the Palestinian territories
Press release 532/2006
17 December, 2006
The Presidency of the EU calls on Palestinian groups to show restraint. It is urgent to stop the armed clashes, to work for national unity and to resume the peace process. This is the only way to ease the deteriorating humanitarian and economic situation in the Palestinian territories.
The EU has constantly supported President Abbas and his efforts to form a government of national unity. The European Council reiterated on 15 December the EU's readiness to work with a legitimate Palestinian government that adopts a platform reflecting the Quartet principles.
The speech of President Abbas and his announcement to call for early elections is an attempt to break the political deadlock. The Presidency of the EU is encouraged that, despite the call for early elections, efforts are continued to pursue the formation of a government of national unity.
