  Pursuant to rule 11 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, the Secretary-General is submitting the following summary statement.

  The list of items of which the Security Council is seized is contained in document S/2006/10 of 1 March 2006.

  The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 5401st meeting, held on 29 March 2006 in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations, having before it the report of the Secretary-General pursuant to paragraph 6 of resolution 1644 (2005) (S/2006/176).

  The President, with the consent of the Council, invited the representative of Lebanon, at his request, to participate in the consideration of the item without the right to vote.

  The President drew attention to a draft resolution (S/2006/186) submitted by France, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America.

  The Security Council proceeded to vote on draft resolution S/2006/186, and adopted it unanimously as resolution 1664 (2006) (for the text, see S/RES/1664 (2006); to be issued in Official Records of the Security Council, Resolutions and Decisions of the Security Council, 1 August 2005-31 July 2006 ).

  The Security Council resumed its consideration of the item at its 5404th meeting, held on 30 March 2006 in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations.

  The President, with the consent of the Council, invited the representatives of Austria, Israel, Lebanon, Malaysia, the Syrian Arab Republic, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen, at their request, to participate in the consideration of the item without the right to vote.

  In response to the request contained in a letter dated 20 March 2006 from the Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations addressed to the President of the Security Council (S/2006/197), the President, in accordance with the rules of procedure and the previous practice in that regard, invited the Permanent Observer of Palestine to participate in the discussion.

  In response to the request contained in a letter dated 28 March 2006 from the Acting Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, the President extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council’s provisional rules of procedure to Paul Badji, Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.

  In accordance with the understanding reached in the Council’s prior consultations, the President, with the consent of the Council, extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council’s provisional rules of procedure to Tuliameni Kalomoh, Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs.
