Mideast situation/Lebanon – Letter from Lebanon

Letter dated 21 January 2002 from the Permanent Representative

of Lebanon to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General

On instructions from my Government, I have the honour to inform you that there were 75 Israeli violations of Lebanese territory during the month of December 2001, broken down as follows:

1. Fifty-three aerial violations by jet fighters;

2. Twelve violations by aerial reconnaissance aircraft;

3. Four violations by helicopters;

4. Four violations of Lebanese territorial waters by the Israeli navy;

5. Two violations of Lebanese territory on the ground.

The violations that Israel continues to commit against Lebanon in the air, at sea and on the ground are in flagrant violations of Security Council resolution 425 (1978) and of Lebanon's sovereignty and they pose a threat to stability in the region.

I should be grateful if you would have this letter circulated as a document of the General Assembly, under agenda item 42, and of the Security Council.

(Signed)  Sélim Tadmoury

Ambassador

Permanent Representative
