Mideast situation/Syrian airspace – Letter from Syria

Letter dated 20 November 1985 from the Permanent Representative of

the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations

addressed to the Secretary-General

On instructions from my Government, I have the honour to convey to you the following:

At precisely 12.19 p.m. on 19 November 1985 two Israeli F-15 fighter aircraft violated Syrian airspace. Our aircraft intercepted them and clashed with them in an air battle as a result of which the two enemy aircraft withdrew in the direction of the occupied Arab territories.

This provocative act, which comes as one further element in the series of acts of aggression that Israel has constantly committed, once again demonstrates the fact that Israel persists in violating international law and practices and continues to escalate tension in the region, with the serious consequences that that entails for international peace and security.

The Government of the Syrian Arab Republic, in drawing attention to the consequences of this act of aggression, affirms its legitimate right to respond decisively thereto.

I request that this letter be circulated as an official document of the General Assembly, under agenda item 38, and of the Security Council.

(Signed) Dia-Allah EL-FATTAL

Permanent Representative
