Letter dated 14 June 2000 from the Secretary-General
addressed to the President of the Security Council
I have the honour to refer to the composition of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and to my report of 22 May 2000 on the implementation of Security Council resolutions 425 (1978) and 426 (1978) (S/2000/590). In the report, I indicated what reinforcements UNIFIL would need in order to perform its functions following the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon.
The Government of Ukraine has offered an engineering battalion and the Government of Sweden a unit specialized in the destruction of explosives and ammunition.
Following the usual consultations, I propose that Ukraine and Sweden be added to the list of States providing contingents to UNIFIL.
I should be grateful if you would bring this matter to the attention of the members of the Security Council.
