Supplemental information

The Chief of Staff of UNTSO, Major-General Ensio Siilasvuo , has submitted the following report on incidents observed by United Nations military observers and complaints received from, the parties on 3 October 1972.

Israel-Lebanon sector

1. OP 1/ reports:

OP Ras:  Between 0505 2/ and 1531 Israel forces personnel and vehicles reoccupied position at point at approximate MR 1709-2749, north of border pillar 19.

2. Complaints by the parties:

Complaints have been received from Lebanon alleging that:

(a) On 1 October between 0935 and 0955 two Israel forces jet aircraft overflew the Lebanese regions of Naqoura (approximate MR l636-2804) and Sour (approximate MR 169-297).

(b) On 2 October between 0920 and 0940 two Israel forces jet aircraft overflew, in several passes, the Lebanese regions of Naqoura and Sour and Lebanese territorial waters.

(c) On 2 October between 1240 and 1310 two Israel forces jet aircraft overflew the Lebanese regions of Yarine (approximate MR 1723-2789), Tibnine (approximate MR 1886-2887), Nabatiye (approximate MR 1958-3090), Karaoun (32 kilometres east of Said), Rachaiya El Ouadi (approximate MR 2285-3220), Hasbaiya (approximate MR 2147-3115) and Marjayoun (approximate MR 2056-3074. Only complaint (c) was confirmed by United Nations observation for the positions within the observation range of OP (see S/7930/Add. 1754, para. 2).

Israel-Syria sector

OP reports:

(a) OP Two: Between 0305 and 0316 sporadic machine-gun fire by Israel forces (confirmed by OP Winter).

(b) OP Three: Between 0412 and 0417 sporadoci machine-gun fire by Israel forces (confirmed by OP Winter).

(c) OP Yoke: Between 0424 and 0435, 1525 and 1527, 1544 and 1545, 1606 and 1613, and 1938 and 1939, sporadic machine-gun fire by Israel forces (the three latter confirmed by OP Zodiac).

(d) OP X-Ray: Between 0425 and 0428 sporadic to intense machine-gun fir by Israel forces.

(e) OP Zodiac: Between 0925 and 0936 sporadic machine-gun fire by Israel forces.

(f) OP Romeo: At 1611 machine-gun fire, which ceased immediately, by Syrian forces.

(g) OP Seven: At 1843 two rounds of mortar fire by Syrian forces and immediately afterwards one mortar flare by Israel forces. At 1844 intense small-arms fire, machine-gun fire and 40 mm. cannon fire by Israel forces. Immediately afterwards small-arms fire by Syrian forces. At 1845 six rounds of artillery fire by Israel forces. The exchange of fire by both parties ceased at 1850. Between 1951 and 1953 three rounds of artillery fire and one flare by Israel forces.

(h) OP One: Between 2015 and 2017 and between 2034 and 2035 machine-gun fire by Israel forces.
