Letter dated 13 February 2002 from the Permanent Representative of Lebanon

to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General

  I should like to inform you that there were 44 Israeli aerial, terrestrial and maritime violations of Lebanese sovereignty during the month of January 2002, broken down as follows:

 (a)   Twenty-three aerial violations by Israeli warplanes;
 (b)   Nine aerial violations by reconnaissance aircraft;
 (c)   Four aerial violations by helicopters;
 (d)   Three naval violations of Lebanese territorial waters;
 (e)   One air raid in which localities in Lebanese territory were bombed;
 (f)   Two violations in which localities in Lebanese territory came under artillery and other fire;
 (g)   Two violations in which there were encroachments on Lebanese territory.

  The incursions and encroachments committed by Israel in the air, on the ground and at sea are in violation of the Blue Line and contravene the provisions of Security Council resolution 425 (1978). They undermine stability and create a climate of tension in the region.

  I should be grateful if you would have this letter circulated as a document of the General Assembly, under agenda item 42, and of the Security Council.

( Signed) Sélim Tadmoury
