WHO concerned over deteriorating health of Palestinian hunger-striker
Jerusalem, 18 February 2016-The World Health Organization West Bank and Gaza office joins United Nations partners in the serious concern over the life and health of a Palestinian administrative detainee, Mr. Mohamed Qiq, who is continuing a hunger strike to protest his detention without trial, now in its 85th day. He remains in the care of an Israeli hospital where his health situation is critical, and where his wishes against taking nutrition are being respected, in accordance with right to health guarantees.
In 2015, WHO joined a joint UN statement against the force-feeding of hunger strikers which emphasized "the importance of working towards improving health and human rights conditions of Palestinian prisoners in line with international standards." As then noted (8 August 2015), "The practice of administrative detention is incompatible with international human rights law and should be ended. All detainees should be promptly charged or released."[1]
WHO in support of UN requests issued earlier by the UN Resident Coordinator[2] urges all parties to resolve this issue according to the universal principles of human rights.
