The Secretary-General met today with His Majesty, King Abdullah of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

The Secretary-General and His Majesty discussed the launch of the direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. The Secretary-General stressed the support of the Quartet in helping the parties achieve a final agreement within a year, and the need for a conducive regional environment to help reach that goal.

The Secretary-General praised the positive role of Jordan in Palestinian state-building efforts. The King and the Secretary-General spoke of the importance of ensuring a positive environment on the ground to support the negotiations.

They discussed the importance of a comprehensive peace in the region, as well as the current situation in Iraq.
