The Secretary-General met today, 20 September 2010, with H.E. Mr. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, President of Turkmenistan. The Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for Turkmenistan's support for the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia. The Secretary-General and the President discussed the role of preventive diplomacy in ensuring stability and peaceful development in Central Asia. The Secretary-General congratulated the President on the international conference convened in June 2010 in Ashgabat on Disarmament in Central Asia and the Caspian Sea Basin.

The Secretary-General and the President discussed Turkmenistan's initiative in the General Assembly on the stable and reliable transit of energy. The Secretary-General commended the President for his leadership in this area. The Secretary-General also thanked the President for his commitment towards improving conditions in Afghanistan.
