The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Yves Leterme, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Belgium. Foreign Minister Steven Vanackere and Development Cooperation Minister Charles Michel were also present.
The Secretary-General and the Prime Minister discussed the status of the European Union in the United Nations, humanitarian assistance to Pakistan, as well as the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
As for the DRC, discussions touched upon MONUSCO's work, the security situation in eastern parts of the country, and the elections scheduled for 2011. The Secretary-General and the Prime Minister also addressed the issues related to protection of civilians, focusing especially on violence against women. They also discussed the DRC human rights mapping report.
