Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Denis Sassou Nguesso, President of the Republic of the Congo

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Denis Sassou Nguesso, President of the Republic of the Congo.  He commended President Sassou Nguesso for his mediation efforts in the Central Africa Republic. He also thanked him for the Republic of Congo’s contribution to MINUSCA and for taking in a large number of refugees from the Central African Republic. The Secretary-General welcomed President Sassou Nguesso’s decision to convene an international conference on the threat of poaching and illicit wildlife trafficking. He also welcomed the Republic of Congo’s valuable contribution to the Regional Centre for Maritime Security in the Gulf of Guinea, in Pointe Noire. They discussed efforts to combat terrorism around the world, including in the Sahel. They also exchanged views on climate change and the importance of the post-2015 development agenda.
