Note to Correspondents - Peacebuilding Commission Guinea-Bissau Configuration Welcomes Six-point roadmap to end the Political Crisis in Guinea Bissau

Notes to correspondents

The Guinea-Bissau Configuration of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) welcomes the adoption on 10 September of a six-point roadmap agreed during the recent ECOWAS high-level mission to Bissau. The PBC commends in particular all national stakeholders involved in the ECOWAS-brokered dialogue for their commitment to resolve the political crisis in Guinea-Bissau.

The PBC urges national and international stakeholders to seize the opportunity of this agreement and redouble efforts to ensure that Guinea-Bissau turns the page on instability and advances resolutely on the path of good governance, prosperity and greater social cohesion. The swift implementation of the six-point agreement is needed now, and will require that stakeholders have determination, perseverance, and foresight while keeping in mind the best interests of the people of Guinea-Bissau.

The PBC considers the endorsement of this roadmap a significant achievement towards improving political and economic conditions in Guinea Bissau. The PBC firmly stands by ECOWAS’ diplomatic efforts and praises the key role played by H.E. Mr. Alpha Condé, President of the Republic of Guinea and H.E. Mr. Ernest Bai Koroma, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, as well as the support from President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and President Macky Sall of Senegal. Furthermore, the PBC underscores the unflagging efforts of the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Mr. Modibo Ibrahim Touré, who has played an equally critical role in this great achievement.

The PBC is deeply committed to supporting the successful implementation of the road map that will ensure that all Bissau-Guineans enjoy the fruits of peace and wellbeing. In this regard, it looks forward to further consultations with the key stakeholders on the margins of the UN General Assembly in September 2016.
