“It’s hot out.
Not just regular summer hot.
Temperatures are at record high across Africa, Asia, Europe and North America.
We’re being familiarized with what prolonged heat domes mean.
Is this all climate change?
No, of course not. Climate change is not an extreme event. It is the tendency what we are witnessing, and its pace is growing.
Scientists had warned us that climate change will mean more frequent and deadlier heatwaves. More wild fires, more devastating hurricanes, typhoons and faster melting of ice caps.
That’s because we are changing the composition of the atmosphere. Emitting record amount of greenhouse gases.
We burn trillions of tons of fossil fuels – like coal and oil – and they release CO2 and other GHGs that trap the heat in our atmosphere.
Unless we break this cycle, we will have even more record weather extremes.
That means we will move further and further away from the climate we’re used to.
As the President of the General Assembly, I call on the international community to act.
From governments, companies, civil society groups, scientists, to you listening… It’s all our responsibility to act to stop climate change.
For Member States and all stakeholders attending the SDG Summit: Come with concrete proposals and transform the way we do business.
Don’t talk a lot of hot air.
We have enough of that.”
