NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS
Spokesperson for General Assembly President Csaba Kőrösi
United Nations Headquarters, New York
Friday, 20 January 2023
TüRKIYE
Let me start with the bilateral President Csaba Kőrösi just had with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.
The meeting was held at 11am and lasted about 30 minutes.
The main topic discussed was Türkiye’s Zero Waste Initiative. As you know the General Assembly adopted in December a resolution that declared 30 March as the International Day of Zero Waste, and will also push for activities related to combatting climate change and accelerating sustainable development.
Today’s bilateral also touched on topics related to the Black Sea Grain Initiative and humanitarian aid to Syria.
CO-FACILITATORS
This afternoon, the President will speak at a workshop of Co-Facilitators for General Assembly-mandated process.
Let me explain what that means.
You will recall that that the General Assembly has mandated 16 process, which are basically some of the priorities for the General Assembly, and work on them is led by two Ambassadors, or co-facilitators. They figure out how to move forward on these topics, and take into account the opinions of all the Member States and other groups.
Today, for example, there are informal consultations on the preparations leading to the high-level meeting on tuberculosis. This is one of the processes.
The workshop that I mentioned for this afternoon is being organized by the permanent representatives of Germany and Namibia, who lead the process on Summit of the Future. And it’s meant to increase coordination and cooperation between the different co-facilitators.
In addition to the President, Under-Secretary-General for Policy Guy Ryder, and other UN officials will take part.
FINLAND
Later today, President Kőrösi will meet with Finnish Ambassador Jarmo Viianen, who works on Strategic and Arms Control for Finland.
GABON
On a sad note, I wanted to draw your attention to the President’s message about the death of Gabon’s Foreign Minister Michael Moussa Adamo.
The President extends his condolences to the late Minister’s family and friends, as well as the Government of Gabon.
