Perhaps the best part about working at the UN is that you have an all-access pass to most meetings and events that spark your interest and passion! Growing up knowing friends and relatives who are differently abled and witnessing their daily struggles in my home country, disability inclusiveness has always been a cause that is dear to my heart. This was why, attending the Training Session on Accessibility and Sensitivity Awareness, jointly convened by the OPGA and DGACM in April was an enlightening experience that I truly valued.
The panelists composed of delegates who identified as persons with disabilities and officials who have considerable expertise in the field. It was a very insightful and thought-provoking session, listening to such an inspiring panel speak out about so many sensitive and delicate issues concerning accessibility that we so often take for granted.
Developing an understanding of the needs of others and empathising with them was a key theme that was highlighted, because as was said in the session, “inclusion is not just a policy, but a whole experience”. In essence, it is the sense of enhanced awareness and enthusiastic spirit emanating from this successful event, that I hope to take back with me to my home country and further pursue this worthy and noble cause.
