United Nations Headquarters, New York

SCHEDULE FOR APRIL
I wanted to highlight three events coming up this month, for your planning purposes.
Next week, on Wednesday, 12 April, will be the second Science Briefing to the General Assembly. This will be an all-day event in the Trusteeship. The topics will be Beyond GDP; Disaster Risk Reduction; and Financing for Development. As with the previous science briefing, there will be scientists and experts from around the world presenting and reacting, and then Member States will joint the conversation. The first Science Briefing was on 7 February. The summaries, presentations, and all related documents are available on the PGA website and I will include the link with my notes: https://www.un.org/pga/77/science-briefings/
On Thursday, 20 April, there will be the second PGA Townhall with Civil Society. It will be held 10AM-noon in Conference Room 1. The theme is “Midway through the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development: Push for Accelerated Progress towards the SDGs.” The townhall will bring relevant data, perspectives and contributions from civil society to the United Nations. It will serve as an informal platform for brainstorming on how to develop and enhance the tools, resources, inputs, and processes to produce a quality change in the implementation of the SDGs. In addition to President Kőrösi, Under-Secretary-General Melissa Fleming, and civil society speakers, there will be reflections from the co-facilitators of the political declaration of the 2023 SDG Summit – Ambassador Fergal Tomas Mythen, the Permanent Representative of Ireland, and Ambassador Alya Ahmed Saif Al-Thani, the Permanent Representative of Qatar. More information is available at https://www.un.org/pga/77/civil-society-townhall2/
On Wednesday, 26 April, in the General Assembly Hall will be the first ever formal debate under agenda item 60 entitled “use of the veto”. The so-called Veto Initiative was adopted about a year ago, and this is an opportunity for Member States to discuss how to use this tool.
