FRANCAPHONIE

This hour, President Csaba Kőrösi is participated in a meeting with the Group of Francophone Ambassadors during the Monthly Meeting of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.

In his remarks, the President said that the voice of La Francophonie is, within this organization, much more than an asset – it is a strength.

He pledged, in his capacity as President of the General Assembly, to act as a vector of multilateralism, multilingualism, and multiculturalism, and of all the values ​​intrinsic to La Francophonie.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Turning to the General Assembly, which this morning started taking action on Committee reports.

In the 10AM session, Member States took action on the report of the First Committee, which is Disarmament and International Security Committee.

During the course of the 77th session, the First Committee held 32 formal and informal meetings to consider the 22 agenda items it was allocated.

For the first time in two years, due to COVID, the Committee performed its work fully in-person – as you know.

Today, Member States took action on those 22 agenda items. The resolutions were adopted, in line with what happened in the Committee.

Right now, it is Ambassador Brian Wallace, the Permanent Representative of Jamaica and one of the Vice-Presidents who is presiding over the GA.

 

SIXTH COMMITTEE

This afternoon, the General Assembly will consider the reports of the Sixth – or the Legal – Committee and take actions on 30 agenda items allocated to that Committee.

Immediately after, Member States will then take action on a draft resolution on cooperation between the United Nations and the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System.

 

BILATERALS

Turning to bilaterals, President Kőrösi will meet today with the incoming Under-Secretary-General for Policy, Guy Ryder. They will discuss Our Common Agenda.

 

INDIGENOUS ISSUES

This morning, members of the OGPA human rights team met informally with the Group of Friends of Indigenous Peoples.

They discussed the launch of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, which is scheduled for 16 December.

 

UN WATER SUMMIT ON GROUNDWATER

Two items to note on water.

The UN Water Summit on Groundwater is underway in Paris.

President Kőrösi  is represented by Dr. Johannes Cullman, who as the Chief Scientific Advisor is a senior member of the Office

 

UN WATER CONFERENCE

And a note on the UN 2023 Water Conference which will be held in March.
