COP27

I wanted to start with a travel announcement.

President Csaba Kőrösi will travel to Egypt this weekend for 27th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties, otherwise known as COP27.

On Monday, 14 November, he will give remarks at the opening of the Water Day conference.

As you know, this is the first COP where water is officially on the agenda.

On Tuesday, 15 November, President Kőrösi will participate in ministerial-level meetings related to energy.

We expect that the President will have a number of bilaterals with national officials, as well as meetings with representatives of civil society, women and youth.

IAEA

Turning to the General Assembly.

Member States this morning debated the latest report of the International Atomic Energy Agency – the IAEA.

President Kőrösi said the international events of this past year have had a substantial impact on the IAEA’s work.

He noted that the world is faced with risks of nuclear proliferation and nuclear catastrophe not seen in decades.

The President thanked Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and all IAEA experts who have risked their lives in the name of nuclear stability and security.

Speaking about the IAEA Mission in Zaporizhzhia, the President said quote “we simply cannot allow nuclear safety in Ukraine and beyond to be jeopardized”.

The President also spoke about the importance of cooperation on the Korean Peninsula.

As well the role of the IAEA in establishing a possible nuclear weapons free zone in the Middle East.

The IAEA debate is expected to continue in the afternoon session.

Action on a draft resolution entitled “Report of the International Atomic Energy Agency” is expected during that session, which will start at 3PM Et.

 

G4

President Kőrösi just met with the representatives of the G4 Group – Brazil, Germany, India and Japan.

The President and the Ambassadors discussed Security Council reform, ahead of the plenary meeting on this this topic, which is set for Thursday of next week, 17 November.

 

IGN

Related, President Kőrösi will meet later today with the Intergovernmental Negotiations Co-Chairs – who are chairing the Member State-led effort to reform the Security Council.

Those chairs are Ambassador Michal Mlynar, the Permanent Representative of Slovakia, and Ambassador Tareq Albanai, the Permanent Representative of Kuwait.

 

CSO TOWNHALL REGISTRATION

I wanted to let you know that President Kőrösi will hold a civil society townhall on Friday, 2 December, here at UN Headquarters.

Civil Society Organizations in consultative status with ECOSOC, formally associated with the Department of Global Communications, and other stakeholders are invited to attend.

Parties interested in delivering a keynote statement should apply before Monday, 14 November.

TOMORROW

Looking to tomorrow in the General Assembly, Member States will debate the situation in Afghanistan, on the basis of the latest report by the UN Assistance Mission in the country, or UNAMA.
