NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS

This morning in the General Assembly Hall, Member States took part in a debate on the on the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals.
Before inviting Judge Graciela Gatti Santana to the rostrum, President Csaba Kőrösi congratulated the Judge on her appointment as President of the Mechanism, and pledged his full support to the important work of the Tribunal.
He said that “in these turbulent times, it is crucial to support international courts and tribunals like the IRMCT that work to further the rule of law, and hold accountable the perpetrators of the most serious and heinous crimes.
Institutions like the IRMCT send a clear message that the international community will not sit back passively and allow for impunity when the gravest of crimes have been committed.
This Tribunal also serves as a testament of some of our darkest chapters of modern history, preserving accurate historical records and fighting genocide deniers.”
President Kőrösi then encouraged all Member States to continue to cooperate with and support the Tribunal in line with their obligations under international law.
MAIN COMMITTEES
Earlier today, President Kőrösi met with the chairs of the Main GA committees to discuss progress and any challenges coming up.
The chair of the First Committee is Ambassador Mohan Pieris, the Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka.
Ambassador Lachezara Stoeva, the Permanent Representative of Bulgaria chairs the Second Committee.
Ambassador José Alfonso Blanco Conde, the Permanent Representative of Dominican Republic, chairs the Third.
The Fourth Committee is chaired by Ambassador Mohamed Al Hassan, the Permanent Representative of Oman.
The Fifth by Ambassador Philippe Kridelka, the Permanent Representative of Belgium.
The Sixth by Ambassador Pedro Comissário Afonso, the Permanent Representative of Mozambique.
BILATERALS
Turning to bilaterals.
President Kőrösi today meets with the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar, Ms. Noeleen Heyzer. The Special Envoy will brief the Third Committee on Tuesday of next week.
President Kőrösi has a number of meetings related to water, which is one of the main topics for the 77th session and his own priorities.
The President will meet with UNDP Associate Administrator Usha Rao-Monari.
President Kőrösi will also meet today with the Permanent Representatives of Netherlands and Tajikistan, Ambassador Yoka Brandt and Ambassador Jonibek Hikmat.
They are the co-hosts of the UN 2023 Water Conference.
Today’s discussion will be about the preparatory meeting for the Conference, which will to be held on 25 October. And ahead of that preparatory meeting, there will be stakeholder consultations on 24 October organized by OPGA. You will have a media advisory on that tomorrow.
GA THURSDAY
Turning to tomorrow, 20 October. The General Assembly will hold a debate on Economic and Social Council’s annual report.
Also tomorrow, President Kőrösi will participate in an interactive dialogue between Member States and Resident Coordinators.
