NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS

Spokesperson for General Assembly President Csaba Kőrösi
United Nations Headquarters, New York

Wednesday, 5 October 2022

FRIDAY GA SCHEDULE

I wanted to start with some additions to the schedule of the General Assembly.

This Friday, 7 October, at 10AM ET Member States will take action on a draft resolution sponsored by Pakistan.

The draft expresses solidarity and support to the People and Government of Pakistan in the wake of the floods.

The General Assembly will then consider a report from the Fifth Committee – which is the Administrative and Budgetary Committee.

This is on agenda item 142 – the scale of assessment.

If the plenary agrees, it would allow São Tomé and Principe, Comoros, and Somalia to keep their rights to vote in the GA for the 77th session. This concerns an exemption of payment of contribution to the UN for this session

FIFTH COMMITTEE

Speaking of the Fifth Committee, President Csaba Kőrösi addressed the Committee yesterday afternoon.

He told members that as the world looks to the UN for action and solutions, the Fifth Committee plays the key role in upholding the reputation and credibility of the organization.

It does so by ensuring that our finances are managed in a fully accountable, transparent, and efficient manner.

GREEN TRANSITION

Also yesterday, President Kőrösi took part in a discussion on challenges to the green transition.

He said whether green or blue, what we’re talking about is a sustainable development transformation.

President Kőrösi said we are on a new page of history that started with the COVID pandemic, which swept through societies. Swept through economies and finances.

And when you then combine non-sustainable development with geopolitical conflicts – it’s a dangerous combination.

We fact systemic challenges and need to think of systemic solutions.

BILATERALS

In terms of bilaterals today, President Kőrösi is meeting this afternoon with Ambassador Osama Abdelkhalek.

QUESTIONS

The Spokesperson was asked whether the Emergency Special Session is expected to run through Wednesday. The Spokesperson said that no date past Monday had yet been scheduled for the ESS.

The Spokesperson was asked if an ESS-related resolution has been formally submitted yet. The Spokesperson said that a draft would be submitted to the Secretariat, not OPGA. She was not aware of a draft being submitted.

The Spokesperson was asked about a letter requesting that action taken on a rumored draft resolution during the ESS be done so through a secret ballot. The Spokesperson confirmed to the journalist by email that OPGA had not received the letter.

In response to a question, the Spokesperson confirmed that the Emergency Special Session would resume on Monday, 10 October at 3PM ET.
